If there’s one thing I can say about my job as a Spitting Pig Midlands hog roast chef it’s that there’s not been a dull moment yet. You might think that’s remarkable if you know about hog roasting and know that for many events a hog roast chef like myself can be stuck behind a Spitting Pig machine for hours… 10 hours, sometimes! But even though I can find myself behind a machine for most the morning, afternoon or evening I still say there’s never a dull moment because from tending to the hog roast to conversing with guests I’m always doing something I enjoy.
When we catered a spit roast pig for a birthday party over the weekend I really enjoyed myself, even more than usual. Not only was I kept warm by a spit roast machine for most the evening, I was also kept entertained as guests over the course of the evening came over to have a look at the hog roasting action.
I guess that’s why hog roasting is such a fantastic job for me. It’s not something everyone can do, it’s probably fair to say you need to be a sociable person and enjoy interacting, considering at times it gets very hectic, with hog roast question after question – “How long do hog roasts take?â€, “where’d you get the pig?†“you must be hungry looking at that all day†are sentences you hear almost non stop if you’re hog roasting at busy events as myself and the Spitting Pig chefs do. But because Spitting Pig chefs liek the waitresses are chosen on character as well as skill it’s a positive for me, because I enjoy entertaining and putting on a show for interested and eager guests.
But I can’t spend every second of every event speaking and having a laugh with the guests, I don’t want to get fired! On the weekend birthday party event I put plenty of time into tending to the hog roast, making sure that the spit was turning properly and a correct rate, that the heat was right, ensuring the hog is cooked through rather than just cooking on the outside. I also helped out our second chef Andy when I got the chance, aiding him in prepping canapes and desserts.
I’d say yesterday was a 5 star day for myself and Spitting Pig. The event was entertaining and enjoyable and I know the guests felt the same way because the pig cooked perfectly, it was juicy as you like and filled with chock full of flavour. It carved perfectly, with guests getting plentiful serving of meat, spitting pigs famous crackling, stuffing and apple sauce – and that’s not mentioning the canapes, starters, side dishes and desserts that Spitting Pig chef Andy created!
To say I can’t wait to get back out there again this week and make more hog roasts would be an understatement.
